▼ Description
Sulfotransferases (SULTs) catalyze sulfate conjugation, an important pathway in the biotransformation of neurotransmitters, hormones, drugs, and xenobiotics. SULT1C2 belongs to a SULT subfamily that shows specificity for hydroxyarylamines (Freimuth et al., 2000).

▼ Cloning and Expression
By searching an EST database for SULT1C sequences, followed by 5-prime RACE using brain total RNA and screening of a fetal lung cDNA library, Sakakibara et al. (1998) cloned SULT1C2. The deduced 302-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 35.5 kD. SULT1C2 shares 62.9% amino acid identity with SULT1C1 (SULT1C2; 602385). RNA dot blot analysis detected high expression of SULT1C2 only in fetal lung and kidney, with lower levels in fetal heart and in adult kidney, ovary, and spinal cord. Recombinant SULT1C2 expressed in E. coli showed an apparent molecular mass of 35 kD by SDS-PAGE.

▼ Gene Function
By functional characterization of recombinant protein, Sakakibara et al. (1998) determined that SULT1C2 catalyzed the sulfonation of p-nitrophenol and N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene, but not dopamine.

▼ Gene Structure
Freimuth et al. (2000) determined that the SULT1C2 gene contains 7 exons and spans about 10 kb. Unlike other SULT1 family members, SULT1C2 does not have a noncoding upstream exon. The 5-prime flanking region contains no TATA or CAAT motifs, but it has a 162-bp repetitive element that is repeated twice.

▼ Mapping
By genomic sequence analysis, Freimuth et al. (2000) mapped the SULT1C2 gene (SULT1C4) to chromosome 2q11.2, close to the SULT1C1 gene.
