▼ Cloning and Expression
Hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) are a group of immature blood cells capable of differentiating into all types of cells found in the peripheral blood. HSPCs express CD34 (142230) and can be further distinguished by expression or absence of CD38 (107270). Mao et al. (1998) constructed a library of ESTs and cDNAs from human CD34+ cells. A cDNA for C14ORF2, which the authors termed MP68, encodes the 58-amino acid human homolog of rat 6.8-kD mitochondrial proteolipid.

Meyer et al. (2007) identified Mp68 as a subunit of bovine and rat heart mitochondrial ATP synthase complexes. Using database analysis, they identified human MP68 and the Drosophila ortholog. Human MP68 is 58 amino acids long and has a central transmembrane segment and a potential phosphorylation site.

By radiation hybrid analysis, Mao et al. (1998) mapped the C14ORF2 gene to chromosome 14q32.33.
