ATP5L is a subunit of the F0 ATPase complex, which is involved in generation of ATP (Dahiya et al., 2017).

▼ Cloning and Expression

By sequencing clones obtained from a CD34 (142230)-positive hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell cDNA library, Zhang et al. (2000) cloned ATP5L, which they designated F1F0-ATPase synthase g. The deduced protein contains 103 amino acids. ATP5L was highly expressed in all 5 human hematopoietic cell lines examined. An ortholog of ATP5L was detected in nonprimate mammals, C. elegans, and Drosophila, but not in yeast or Arabidopsis.

▼ Gene Function

Dahiya et al. (2017) identified 2 seed sequences for the microRNA MIR570 (614538) in the 3-prime UTR of ATP5L transcript. Overexpression of MIR570 in human platelets downregulated ATP5L mRNA and had a modest effect in reducing platelet ATP content. Reporter gene assays confirmed that MIR570 negatively regulates ATP5L expression via the 3-prime UTR of ATP5L.
